Glitch art

Playing around with digital anomalies

OBJECTIVES

  • Discover what a glitch is and its role in the world of contemporary digital art.
  • Understand the principle of digital data by playing around with image file data using a software programme intended for audio.
  • Be visually creative while letting chance events guide you.
  • Get a feel for the role played by mistakes and anomalies in images.

WHO’S IT FOR?

Maximum number of participants: 16. Open to all (from 11 years old). Some experience of using digital technology required. You will be working in pairs. The workshop is run by two trainers.

DESCRIPTION

A glitch (or a bug) is a problem that stops something working correctly and glitch art is produced by using these errors in a creative and aesthetic manner. Glitches can be produced intentionally by manipulating software code, or the data that constitutes the digital file. In this workshop, participants will be encouraged to create glitches in images of their choice, either images found on the Internet or scanned before the workshop. To this end they will transform their data using sound processing software. This creative activity will allow participants to understand what exactly “digital data” is, as well as making them aware of the role of chance in the creative process.
